Passivation
PASSIVATION:
Passivation is a process used to enhance the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Stainless steel is inherently resistant to corrosion due to the presence of a thin layer of chromium oxide on its surface. However, this layer can be damaged during manufacturing or handling, reducing the material’s corrosion resistance.
Passivation involves removing any surface contaminants, such as dirt or oils, and then exposing the stainless steel to an oxidizing agent, typically a nitric acid solution. This process facilitates the formation of a new layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the stainless steel, which helps to protect the material from corrosion.
Passivation is an important step in ensuring the long-term corrosion resistance of stainless steel components, particularly those used in harsh or corrosive environments.
